The 5 Best Races For Sorcerers 5e D&D

The 5 Best Races For Sorcerers 5e D&D

Sorcerers might seem like your ordinary spellcasters, but their power is usually not understood, and their unpredictable strength tends to show in their personalities.

Races fitting Sorcerers are those with high Charisma and Constitution, but an extra Feat or two won’t hurt either.

Best Races for Sorcerers 5e D&D

5. Aasimar

Ability Score Increase – One score by 2 and a different score by 1 OR Three different scores by 1.

Age – Aasimar mature at the same speed as humans, though they live up to 160 years.

Alignment – Most Aasimar are good, but outcast Aasimar are often Neutral or Evil.

Creature Type – Humanoid

Size – Medium or Small (choose when selecting this race)

Speed – Base walking speed of 30 feet.

Racial Features – Darkvision, Celestial Resistance, Healing Hands, Light Bearer, and Celestial Revelation (choose between Necrotic Shroud, Radiant Consumption, and Radiant Soul).

Languages – Speak, read, and write Common and one other language deemed appropriate by the DM.

Aasimar don’t often become spellcasters, but they definitely can. The Light Bearer feature already gives you a free Cantrip (Light), and the Healing Hands lets you heal yourself or allies, even if it’s only for a few HP.

The Celestial Revelation empowers your Sorcerer even more as you gain the ability to fly or deal extra Necrotic or Radiant damage.

4. Human

Ability Score Increase – Each score by 1.

Age – Humans mature in their late teens and live less than 100 years.

Alignment – Any

Creature Type – Humanoid

Size – Medium, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet, and almost any varying Human weight.

Speed – Base walking speed of 30 feet.

Languages – Speak, read, and write Common and one language you choose.

Humans, whether you’re taking Standard or Variants, are a great choice for building a versatile Sorcerer, as many humans are close to nature anyway, making their background easy enough to adapt.

I like Variant Humans a bit more because they get a free Feat and skill proficiency, but Standard Humans aren’t bad either.

3. Red Chromatic Dragonborn

Ability Score Increase – One score by 2 and a different score by 1 OR Three different scores by 1.

Age – Dragonborn grow quickly and reach adulthood by the age of 15 and living to be around 80 years of age.

Alignment – Dragonborn make conscious choices between Good and Evil, though some are Neutral, and there are even fewer who choose to be all three alignments.

Creature Type – Humanoid

Size – Medium, Dragonborn are taller than most Humans, being well over 6 feet tall and around 250 pounds.

Speed – Base walking speed of 30 feet.

Racial Features – Chromatic Ancestry (Chromatic, Red, Fire), Breath Weapon, Draconic Resistance, and Chromatic Warding.

Languages – Speak, read, and write Common and one other language deemed appropriate by your DM.

Red Chromatic Dragonborn might not have any inherent spellcasting buffs, but it does have the Breath Weapon, which allows you to deal a decent amount of Fire damage in quite a large area.

You also have extra durability with Draconic Resistance and Chromatic Warding.

2. Mephistopheles Tiefling

Ability Score Increase – Charisma by 2.

Ability Score Increase – Intelligence by 1.

Age – Mature the same as Humans but live a few years longer.

Alignment – Tieflings have no innate tendency towards Evil, though many become Evil, and their independent nature pushes them towards a Chaotic nature.

Creature Type – Humanoid

Size – Medium, the same size as Humans.

Speed – Base walking speed of 30 feet.

Racial Features – Darkvision, Hellish Resistance, and Legacy of Cania (Mephistopheles).

Languages – Speak, read, and write Infernal and Common.

Mephistopheles Tieflings gain some much-needed spells like Mage Hand and Burning Hands, which will definitely give Sorcerers some edge in the early game.

They also have extra durability with Hellish Resistance and can see in the dark to cast spells or keep line of sight with enemy targets.

1. Yuan-Ti

Ability Score Increase – One score by 2 and a different score by 1 OR Three different scores by 1.

Age – Yuan-Ti mature similarly to Humans and usually live around 100 years.

Alignment – Yuan-Ti see others as tools and use manipulation, though they care not for Chaos or Law, being mostly Neutral Evil.

Creature Type – Humanoid

Size – Medium or Small, ranging from below 5 feet to more than 6 feet, and weighing between 130 and 180 pounds.

Speed – Base walking speed of 30 feet.

Racial Features – Darkvision, Magic Resistance, Poison Resistance, and Serpentine Spellcasting.

Languages – Speak, read, and write Common and one other language deemed appropriate by your DM.

Yuan-Ti are basically the perfect Sorcerer candidates as they have a lot of durability from Magic Resistance and Poison Resistance, something Sorcerers often struggle with.

However, they also gain access to a few spells through the Serpentine Spellcasting feature, furthering their aptitude for casting spells.

Final Thoughts

Sorcerers might be wildcards, though, with the races above, their Chaos becomes a bit more manageable.

Not only that, these races also give the player more background options and equip them with great gameplay improvements.
