What Are Backgrounds in D&D 5e?
Backgrounds are more than simple stat boosts in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. They reveal where your character came from, why you became an adventurer, and your place in the world.
Before choosing your Background, ask yourself a few questions:
- What was I before I became an adventurer?
- Why did I stop doing what my Background explains and become an adventurer?
- Where did I get the money to buy my starting equipment?
- Where did I learn the skills used in my class?
- What’s different about me compared to others with the same Background?
Best Backgrounds for Loxodons
5. Knight of the Order
Skill Proficiencies – Persuasion, plus one among Religion, Nature, History, and Arcana, as appropriate for your knight’s order
Tool Proficiencies – One type of gaming set or a musical instrument
Languages – Choose one
Equipment – A seal representing your place or rank in the order, a set of traveler’s clothes, a banner, a signet, and a pouch with 10GP.
Why the Knight of the Order?
Knight of the Order gives your Loxodon Knightly Regard, meaning you and your party will receive food, healing, shelter, and, at times, physical aid.
There are many Knight Orders that protect the peace, and funnily enough, many Loxodons tend to join those orders, helping them keep the peace with their large physiques and calm nature.
4. Cloistered Scholar
Skill Proficiencies – History, plus one among Religion, Nature, and Arcana
Tool Proficiencies – None
Languages – Choose two
Equipment – The scholar’s robes of your cloister, a borrowed book on the subject of your current study, a writing kit (a pouch with a small penknife, folded parchment, a bottle of ink, and a quill), and a pouch with 10GP.
Why the Cloistered Scholar?
Cloistered Scholar gives your Loxodon Library Access, granting you entry to libraries of vast knowledge and ways to navigate through bureaucratic connections.
Because of their calm, long lifespans, many Loxodons choose to become scholars, learning about the world around them and using their excellent memory to remember centuries of knowledge.
3. Izzet Engineer
Skill Proficiencies – Investigation, Arcana
Tool Proficiencies – A single type of artisan’s tools
Languages – Choose one of Vedalken, Goblin, or Draconic
Equipment – A set of common clothes, a block and tackle, a hammer, the charred and twisted remains of a failed experiment, an Izzet insignia, one set of artisan’s tools, and a pouch with 5GP (Azorius 1-zino coins).
Why the Izzet Engineer?
Izzet Engineers gain the Urban Infrastructure and Izzet Guild Spells features.
Urban Infrastructure allows you to understand and be able to construct mundane tasks of construction and architecture. Things like running water, levitating platforms, and other technological and magical wonders.
Note: You can even get your hands on blueprints of these constructions.
You can have various spells (up to 5th-level spells) added to your spell list, most of which are unnecessarily explosive, flashy, or loud. See the spells below:
Spell Level | Spell |
Cantrip | Shocking Grasp, Produce Flame |
1st | Unseen Servant, Create or Destroy Water, Chaos Bolt |
2nd | Rope Trick, Heat Metal |
3rd | Glyph of Warding, Elemental Weapon, Call Lightning |
4th | Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere, Divination, Conjure Minor Elementals |
5th | Conjure Elemental, Animate Objects |
Loxodons tend to be infatuated with the mundane, making them perfect Izzet Engineers, especially because of their great memory and wisdom.
2. Boros Legionnaire
Skill Proficiencies – Intimidation, Athletics
Tool Proficiencies – A single type of gaming set
Languages – Choose one of Minotaur, Goblin, Draconic, or Celestial
Equipment – A set of common clothes, a tattered piece of a Boros banner (a souvenir from a famous battle), a feather from an angel’s wing, a Boros insignia, and a pouch with 2GP (Boros-minted 1-zino coins)
Why the Boros Legionnaire?
Boros Legionnaires have the Legion Station, and Boros Guild Spells features.
Legion Station allows you to request equipment for temporary use, enter a Boros garrison for rest and safety, and receive medicine. You also have a salary of 1GP per week.
You can have various spells (up to 5th-level spells) added to your spell list, which usually includes dramatic bursts of radiance or flame, and beneficial spells will momentarily surround your allies with halos of bright fire.
Spell Level | Spell |
Cantrip | Sacred Flame, Fire Bolt |
1st | Heroism, Guiding Bolt |
2nd | Scorching Ray, Aid |
3rd | Blinding Smite, Beacon of Hope |
4th | Wall of Fire, Death Ward |
5th | Flame Strike |
Because of their monolithic size and strength, Loxodons are often asked to join the Boros Legion, as their power can greatly boost the Legion’s fighting forces.
Not many Loxodons accept this request, but there are some out there who are a bit less calm than others.
1. Outlander
Skill Proficiencies – Survival, Athletics
Tool Proficiencies – One type of musical instrument
Languages – One you choose
Equipment – A trophy from an animal you killed, a set of traveler’s clothes, a hunting trap, a staff, and a pouch with 10GP.
Why the Outlander?
Outlanders have the Wanderer feature, giving them an excellent memory for geography and maps. Allowing them to always recall the general layout of settlements, terrain, and features around them.
They can also find fresh water and food for themselves and up to five others every day if the land offers water, small game, berries, and other things.
Loxodons are easy-going, calm creatures that can easily survive in the wild because of their link to nature and keen sense of smell, which alerts them of any danger.
However, not many creatures can stand against, let alone fight, a Loxodon in the first place.
Final Thoughts
To wrap things up, when selecting backgrounds for your Loxodon in D&D 5e, consider those that emphasize their strong sense of community and their connection to nature.
Backgrounds such as Knight of the Order, Outlander, or Boros Legionnaire can provide rich roleplaying opportunities, while the Cloistered Scholar or Izzet Engineer backgrounds offer unique skills and perspectives.
